About Me
Jo Smith is a professor in soil organic matter and nutrient dynamics at the University of Aberdeen, where she is co-lead of the Environmental Modelling Group in the School of Biological Science. Her research focusses on improving soils in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, reducing nitrogen waste and increasing recycling of organic wastes to soils. She has developed a number of process-based models of soil processes, constructed these into a systems model and has used these to inform policy makers, advisers and farmers of better ways to improve the sustainability of their farming systems while also reducing pollution to the environment and improving the livelihoods of farmers. She has a particular interest in innovative methods to recycle organic wastes, including anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis and new composting methods.
